It’s been a busy few weeks with decorating, cleaning and de-cluttering (is that a real word??) my house and getting together with friends and family for the holidays and with just a few days until Christmas is here, I still feel like there is so much left to be done.

I must say that since I’m at home with my 3 toddler boys it is hard for me to go out shopping and this holiday season more than ever I’ve done most of my shopping online. I am proud to say that I’ve supported some families along the way whose moms and dads are work at home parents and who offer such wonderfully unique products.

Here are some of my great shopping finds this season:

I bought beautiful handcrafted glass ornaments from my friend Aprilee at her online etsy store Artistry Jewelry Studios

I bought chocolate ornaments from my friend Glenda at her online store Shake Your Bon Bons (I even signed up under Glenda for my own affiliate store---I fell in love with the yummy chocolates and baked goodies).

I bought some Christmas and other holiday books for my kids from my Mom’s (Marjorie) online bookstore Usborne Books http://www.myubam.com/Y2612 and even signed up for a chance to win $50 worth of free books in their monthly drawing.

Recipe for Chocolate Cupcakes

If you’re looking to celebrate in style this Halloween, then look no further. Here are the perfect cupcakes to make your Halloween that extra bit special. Different flavor chocolates are available to please the tastes of all that want to have a try, if they dare!

Makes: 12 Cupcakes
Ease Of preparation: Easy
Cooking Time: 20 minutes

Equipment
Sieve
Piping bag + Nozzle
Muffin tray

Ingredients

Cupcake Ingredients
85g Dark Cooking Chocolate
85g Butter, cut into 2cm cubes
100g Soft Light Brown Sugar
1 Egg
1 Egg Yolk at room temperature
½ tsp Vanilla Extract
1 tbsp Soured Cream
75g Self-Raising Flour
1 tbsp Cocoa Powder
Pinch Salt

Icing Ingredients
30g Confectioners Icing Sugar
2tbsp Organic Cocoa Powder
75g of Soft Unsalted Butter
25g of meted Dark Chocolate for cooking (optional)
Boo Box shapes to decorate
Halloween Pumpkin Munchkins to decorate

Method

1. Preheat the oven to 180/ Gas mark 4 and line a muffin tin with 12 paper cases
2. Put the chocolate, butter and Sugar in a heatproof bowl and place over simmering water and allow to melt, stirring continuously. Set aside to cool slightly.
3. Whisk together the eggs, vanilla and soured cream. Stir this into the cooled chocolate mixture. Sift over the flour, cocoa powder and salt and fold in. Spoon into the paper cases, filing to around 2/3 full.
4. Bake in a preheated oven for approx 20 minutes, until the muffins are risen and just firm to the touch. Allow to cool for 5 minutes, then transfer to a cooling rack
5. To make the chocolate topping melt the dark chocolate over lightly simmering water. Allow to cool.
6. Beat the butter, confectioner sugar and cocoa powder together. Add in the cooled chocolate a table spoon at a time until a thick consistency is achieved. Thick enough to pipe.
7. Place the icing into a piping bag fitted with a piping nozzle of your choice and start from the centre of the cake and pipe outwards.
8. Decorate with Boo Box! Shapes and Halloween Pumpkin Munchkins

Happy Fall Everyone!

I'm enjoying the wonderful crisp fall weather and gearing up for the upcoming holiday season. It’s been a while since I’ve posted on this blog…but I’m back!!
I’ve been focusing on my kids (who are now three and heading off to preschool in a 2 weeks) Wooo Hoooo! And I’ve been focusing on my shopping social network too.

But now I’ve updated my Online Shopping Boutique website with some new promotions, sales and New Stores! And I will share those with you in another post.

But as right now as my boys, who coincidentally have colds, and are now napping, I sit here at my computer sipping some Chai Amaretto Tea I purchased from my Teaporia website. I love jewelry…which woman doesn’t, right? I especially love handcrafted jewelry. I am so fortunate to have a friend who makes the most unique jewelry and why I love her jewelry even more!! It’s at a price I can afford.

Let me introduce you to my friend, Aprilee, the creative genius behind Artisan Jewelry Studios. I purchased some jewelry from her as gifts for others but mostly for me. I always look forward to mail after I purchase because they are always gift wrapped or packaged so beautifully and I can’t wait to see my surprise!!! I’m Aprilee Lawson, the creator behind Artistry Jewelry Studios. I grew up in Maryland. The only girl, raised with an older & younger brother. I was always creative and loved working with my hands. So much that I went to Trade School and became a Certified Carpenter! I was such a good, hard worker that whenever a new guy wanted to apply for a job, my boss would point to me and say "If you can keep-up with her, you've got a job." I only witnessed one guy getting the job! LOL!

When I was in high school I became very interested in working with pastels. I loved them for their "blendability". I hadn't done any work with my hands for some time. When my friend signed-up for a Jewelry Construction Class and didn't want to go alone, I signed up with her. I was actually very reluctant to go. I quickly began developing skills and thursting for more. I began devoting myself to learning all I could about different mediums and techniques. Within the first few classes, I was working with jewelry at home. As time progressed, I was asked to take-over teaching the class. I love researching and learning new things, so jewelry seems to be my perfect "fit".

Jewelry is more than a chain draped around one's neck. It has defined one's class, ethnicity, hopes and dreams, seemingly forever. I am caught-up in all jewelry was, is and can be. Jewelry has redefined who I am as a person, and what I stand for! I have just begun blogging about the history of jewelry! Follow my blog and have fun learning! I always do! I am getting ready to expand my accessories to include crochet collars (yes, I also crochet) and vintage-style millinery hats, headbands, etc. You never know what I'll be doing next!

My sons will be turning 3 in October and when I saw a photo of Liz's Thomas the train card, I just had to ask her to custom make birthday cards for my boys. So I bought one birthday card for each wee one and waited anxiously for them to get to me in the mail. When they got here…they looked so amazing…even better in person. Originally from England I have been living and crafting in the US for nearly 9 years now. I love making greetings cards for all occasions and started making them as I could never find the right one for that special person or occasion. Over the years my designs have evolved and changed as I gain new experiences and inspiration from the world around me, along with learning new techniques.

I live with my husband Clive, Jelly the dog, and Casper the cat in Maryland. I love all sorts of things that are creative, including decorating, gardening and cooking. I also love to travel and see new places and I'm working through my 'Bucket List' of things to do and see. My latest accomplishments includes doing my first marathon and a triathlon.

Our First Easter Egg Hunt

The day didn’t start off with singing birds and warm sunny skies…Oh no…it had to be cold, gray and gloomy with a wicked brisk wind.

As I was happily crashing my toy trucks and trains into the blocks and into the wall (and sometimes into my brothers’ heads) the phone rang. I didn’t hear all that was said but did hear “…Oh that’s today?? It’s so yucky out.” And I thought we better not be going out!

And as I stood gazing out the window and saw the pine trees dancing up and down and back and forth, the one they call Mommy, the pretty one with the big brown eyes and the soft lilty voice entered the room with some clothes in her arms…and I thought “Oh no, we are going out…oh no.” My brother Noah immediately clapped his hands and cheered some unintelligible jibber and yelled “out! Out! Out!” and I smiled though I didn’t mean to.

We all three got corralled and clothed and shoed and then the one they call Daddy, the handsome dude with blue eyes and sandy blonde graying hair (don’t tell him I said graying…he still looks like he’s twenty years old) strapped us in the car. All this corralling, clothing, shoeing and strapping takes about half an hour. Then we were in the car and driving, which was pleasant but then as I was enjoying the ride, it was over and we were at what they call a park. I don’t know why they call it a park because we don’t park there…we jump, and run and play all around…we don’t park…well I can’t figure this stuff out.

Anyway, Joshua and I were then strapped in a double stroller by the one they call Daddy and the Mommy carried Noah. Well what a disaster…the wind was swirling all around us blowing the dust in our eyes. The Mommy yelled at the Daddy pull the canopy over their faces and the Daddy yelled “What?!” So we were wheeled off into the dust in the freezing wind to a section in the park where all these other Daddies and Mommies were standing around with their kids all bundled up…yeah ...freezing.

We saw our little friend Kaila and her brother Shawn and their Mommy and Daddy. And so we stood around for a bit and I just wanted to go home. I fell to the ground and started to wail and cry. The Mommy had to hold me most of the time so I would stop crying. And then all the Mommies and Daddies started counting 5-4-3-2-1 and then everyone started running. Why are they running? What’s going on?

The Mommy was yanking my hand saying “pick it up, pick up the egg.” And I just looked at her thinking egg? What eggs? We don’t have breakfast here, silly Mommy.” The grass was covered with colored odd shaped circles they called eggs. I fell to the ground and started to cry. I’m thinking “why are we here? Let’s go home...it’s too cold.” Then a shiny paper caught my eye and something they call candy beamed up at me. I picked it up along with the broken egg it was originally enclosed and started walking around. In the distance I saw Joshua and Noah with their buckets and they were spilling the eggs out on the ground and then I think the Daddy or a daddy yelled “he’s picking up poop.” Guess who? ... yeah Joshua. I think Josh thought it was a stick. Ha Ha Ha!

Anyway in less than 2 minutes the egg hunt was all over. And I was still cold but I smiled because I got my prize…my shiny gleaming candy. And Oh by the way, the Mommy and the Daddy in the rush forgot to bring the camera, so there are no pictures of Our First Easter Egg hunt….oh wait I think Kaila’s daddy took pictures of us. Maybe you’ll see those pictures next time.

On the ride back home, Joshua grabbed my shiny candy…I think I’m going to have a melt down...it’s coming, it’s coming…I’m now wailing…Hey, gimme back my candy!!!! Waaaaaawwwww!!!!

And yes, you guessed it…now we all three are wailing….Waaaaawwww!!! x3.

I Work from Home to be With My Kids But Work Keeps Getting in the Way!

Does this sound like you? Yep, me too. How can we bring in the extra income that our family needs, yet still be a full-time Mommy? There is a delicate balance that every work-at-home-parent has to find. Here are a few ideas that I have used – perhaps they will help you to find your own balance!

Invest in a timer – and use it!I’m talking about those old-fashioned ticking kind of timers with the loud, annoying bell. This timer can be used to give your kids a set amount of time to do a task you ask them to do, and it can be used to give yourself a set time to work.

I often will tell my girls “Mommy needs 10 more minutes of work time, then we can play. I need to finish (xyz) and it will take me this much time – IF you will not interrupt.” I have found that this works amazingly well – it keeps me on track with the time I tell my kids, and they know that when that bell rings, Mommy is fair game!

Get up extra early Oy, this one is a tough one! I am a night owl, so getting up before my kids is often a chore. However, I have found that when I can pry my eyes open and the house is still quiet, I can sit and have a quiet time with the Lord, unload the dishwasher in preparation for the day, have a cup of coffee with my husband (does this EVER happen anymore?!?!) or any number of other short tasks… in peace!

Stay up extra late I much prefer this method! I have found that I need to be asleep before 10:29 pm or I will lay there awake for a couple of hours. Those couple of hours can be very useful! The house is quiet, there are no interruptions, and I can get some real WORK done! My brain can function like a normal adult’s should, and I don’t have to switch gears in the middle from savvy business-woman to Chief Boo-boo Kisser at a moment’s notice.

I recommend choosing one end of the candle or the other – don’t try to do both! We moms also need our rest – which brings me to the next tip

Take A Break! We all know how it is… we have a (usually self-imposed) deadline that we HAVE to meet, so we will work all hours of the day and night to meet it. When we finally finish the project, we find ourselves crumpled on the couch sipping hot tea and wondering where this cold suddenly came from…

I’ve been there too. Moms, we NEED to take breaks, if not for our own health and sanity, then for the sake of our kids! They need to have Mommy & Me time even more than we need the break, and, quite frankly, we are useless to the house with a cold! Remember that timer? Set it for 15 minutes & go do the dishes, read a book to your pre-schooler, play a game of tag outside on the lawn. Or take it a step further & schedule your family a morning (or day) off! Take the kids to the park, children’s museum, even McD’s will fit the bill! Get out of your PJ’s (I know you’re wearing them!) and out of your house!

For the dads that may be reading this… SEND YOUR WIFE to get a haircut, manicure, massage, a night off without the kids… something pampering! She is working her tail off to keep the house, raise the kids AND run a business. We start getting a little bit wiped out after a while and need something to re-charge our batteries. Trust me… she’ll thank you for it!

Find a Mom’s Networking group…There are so many wonderful networking groups out there that are made up of other work-at-home-moms (WAHM’s) that are facing (or have faced) the same issues you are. One of my personal favorites is MomPack.com. I have had the honor of making many new online friends there, and count it as a valued asset to my business and my life.

There are lots of others too – what business do you have? I’m sure there is a group out there! Are you a Christian? Try CWAHM.com, ChristianWAHM.com, or look online at RYZE.com to find many more! There are forums and groups for just about everything you can think of these days… just google your need followed by “forum” and you will be amazed at what you will find!

Schedule your kids time first Many WAHM’s also homeschool. How do they fit it all in? They schedule in school time first – before ANYTHING else can distract them from teaching their kids. Are your kids still too young for school? Not a problem! Set up a schedule for yourself that has time slots that are “Work Time” with lots of intermittent “Play Time” breaks. Your kids will be much easier to convince that you DO need to work if they know that they get Mommy on a regular schedule! In our home the day starts with breakfast – we roll out of bed & head down to the kitchen to decide what we are going to eat, then I fix it while my girls go get their hair combed & beds made. This works out just about right, as we usually have pancakes. Then we have family time around the table while we eat, and can schedule our day. After breakfast we clean up the dishes and get dressed for the day. Then it is time for school – reading and numbers are as far as we are for now! They get play time while I check emails, and then we have lunch and do a craft. Unfortunately, mine are past the afternoon nap stage, so they usually get to choose a movie to watch after craft time – School House Rock is now on DVD! Then it is time to start dinner (which they now help with), clean off & set the table, etc. Evenings are family time – NO WORK ALLOWED! We have story time and they go to bed around 8:30, which gives us “couple time” for about an hour or so.

Yes, there are days that doesn’t work like this, however I try to keep us on a schedule – the kids function SO much better, and I find that I get more done when I take it in small chunks of time – un-interrupted by kids every 3 seconds!

I hope that some of these ideas will help you find that balance between working at home and the reasons that you chose this path. If we all take it day-by-day, we may find the time to enjoy more of those moments we chose to be at home for!

Ann’s first invention was at eight years old. Even though her idea of a visor/purse combination never came to fruition, it set in motion her creative thinking and the love of sharing her ideas and experiences with others. As she continues to grow as a "mommy expert", wife, sister/friend, business inventor and now author; Ann can only hope to inspire other women to pursue their dreams and become a "Mommy Executive". Nothing is impossible! She is also the co-founder of a women's business networking group in Baton Rouge.

The Sharmooz Company came to fruition with the passion of coming up with the solution for unsightly bald spots on infants. This is a common occurrence with most babies. When her son, Kameron was four weeks old, he started to develop the “bald” spot from the constant rubbing and chaffing against the harsh fabrics in his surroundings, i.e. bouncy seat, swing. Ann reacted quickly because time was fleeting and Kameron’s hair was fading fast. Ann has always used satin pillowcases to protect her hair and styles; then why not try this for babies as well, and therefore the Sharmooz was born. Ann came from a family background of professional seamstress. Ann began sewing at 8 years old. With her sewing, sales & business background, she was able to develop and design the Baby Sharmooz Satin Headrest. With its unique patented design, it allows the baby's head to glide over the headrest, minimizing breakage of the baby's delicate hair while staying in place due to the non-slip backing.

Ann Tillage is the owner, inventor, and "mommy expert" of the multifaceted Sharmooz Company. The company currently has eight different products, two patents pending, and is now in several retailers and growing rapidly.
